Fizeau, Armand-Hippolyte-Louis
(b. Paris France, 23 September 1819; d. Venteuil, near Jouarre, France, 18 September 1896)
experimental physics.
Fizeau was the eldest son of a large and relatively wealthy family that had come to Paris from the Vendeé.
His father held the chair of internal pathology at the Paris Faculty of Medicine from 1823. Fizeau, aspiring to follow in his father’s footsteps, began medical studies at the Collegè Stanislas, but because of poor health he was obliged to interrupt his education in order to travel to a more agreeable climate.
On returning to Paris, he gave up medicine and began an entirely new career in the physical sciences.

At the Collége de France, he studied optics with H.-V. Regnault, and he followed the lectures given at the École Polytechnique through the notebooks compiled by one of his brothers. Fizeau’s most fruitful educational experience, however, was the course of study he took at the Paris observatory under the tutelage of the fa
