Early Years

Queen Elizabeth I was born on 7th September 1533 at Greenwich Palace.

She was the only child of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth was placed in the care of Lady Margaret Bryan and given her own household at Hatfield Place.

In 1534 the Act of Succession made her heir to the throne over her half-sister Mary.

Everyone was required to swear an oath of acceptance of the Act. Those that refused, including Thomas More and John Fisher Bishop of Rochester, were executed. The same year, the Act of Supremacy broke with Rome and made the monarch head of the country and the church.

By 1536, Elizabeth remained the only child of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and the King began to take an interest in Jane Seymour.

Elizabeth’s mother was accused of adultery and executed for treason on 19th May 1536.

By the end of May Henry VIII had married Jane Seymour and in the Summer of 1536 a new Act of Succession relega
